PNWSAR was assigned to grid search segments around an area where the previous day another SAR team had found an item possibly belonging to the subject. No further clues were found. The team then continued along the trail toward base, using a drone to search cliff areas for possible Rope Support Team (RST) deployments. No evidence was found. Arriving back at base, searchers were released for the day.
The search continued again the morning of 10/25 (Day 4), with PNWSAR teams assigned to grid search high-probability areas and trails. The terrain in this area is full of steep hillsides and drainages. A fifth wave of searchers, including the PNWSAR RST, was called for 10/26 (Day 5), and PNWSAR teams entered the field for their assignments at 8:30am. At approximately 10:30am, the PNWSAR team on the Bonanza Trail were contacted on the trail by a group of the subject’s friends, who had also been searching the trails throughout the week, independent of the official search conducted by CCSO. They reported they had made voice contact with the subject while shouting his name, and located him a short ways off the trail about a quarter mile ahead. PNWSAR continued up the trail with the friends and made their way down to the subject’s location. He was cold, tired, and hungry, with some relatively minor injuries, but alert and mobile. The subject was provided food, water, and warm clothes, and then walked back to base with the assistance of his friends and the PNWSAR team.
An incredible number of searchers from SAR teams all over Oregon and Washington assisted with this search, and PNWSAR extends our gratitude to all of our fellow SAR volunteers who worked on this extended mission. PNWSAR wishes the subject well in his recovery.
Late on 10/21, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance locating a missing 59-year-old male with dementia who had walked away from home, near Clackamas High School. PNWSAR responded with three search teams, who completed search assignments in the surrounding area until the early hours. A second wave of searchers was called for 0800 the following day. The first search team began contacting neighbors door-to-door, when an arriving PNWSAR responder thought he spotted the subject, but lost track of him after quickly turning the car around. The search quickly focused on the area where the subject had been spotted, and he was soon located.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance on 10/21 with a continuation of the previous Salmon River Road evidence search for a possible deceased male, covering new search areas deemed probable for evidence. Two PNWSAR teams were deployed to these areas, and no clues were found.
On 10/15, PNWSAR assisted Multnomah County with an evidence search in brushy terrain for an ongoing investigation.
PNWSAR, along with several other volunteer SAR organizations, assisted Skamania County with an evidence search for an open criminal investigation.
In the evening of 10/08, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance locating a 64-year-old woman with dementia. She had last been seen about 4:00pm at a facility in Clackamas. PNWSAR responders divided into five teams to cover several urban search areas. Witnesses reported seeing the subject at three businesses near the point she was last seen, and the search continued until nearly midnight, but the subject was not found that night. The search resumed the next morning with another wave of searchers. PNWSAR teams searched a railroad right-of-way, adjacent fields, and the Three Creeks Natural Area. As teams were completing these assignments, CCSO radioed all teams in the field that the subject had been located in southeast Portland by Portland Police. All returned to base and were released.
On 09/28, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance locating a reported mushroom picker who had been missing near Pyramid Lake since the night of 09/27. PNWSAR responded with ground searchers and an ATV team. The ATV team was assigned to a hasty search of the roads around the search area. Ground search teams covered trails and steep rocky areas to the north and south of Pyramid Lake. CCSO deputies joined searchers in the field in case assistance was needed with the subject, who was reported to be potentially volatile. As the ATV team was returning to base after finishing their assignment, they noticed campfire smoke in the distance and did voice calls, but did not receive a response. Because it was dark by this time and the searchers did not have a CCSO escort, for safety reasons they did not approach toward the smoke.
The search resumed in the morning (09/29) with ground searchers and the PNWSAR Rope Support Team (RST). CCSO assigned the RST to search a cliff area on the south side of Pyramid Lake where the subject's ID had been found the day before by a ground team. Ground searchers completed a grid search in an area west of Pyramid Lake. No new clues were found. All teams returned to base by 3:30pm and were released.
The subject was found safe the evening of 09/29 by CCSO deputies.
On the night of 09/25, Tillamook County requested PNWSAR assistance with a missing mushroom picker near Drift Creek Road. When PNWSAR arrived at base, they were assigned to drive the network of roads near the location the subject was last seen and do voice calls. The terrain was too dangerous to search off road at night, so upon completion of the hasty search around 2:30am, the search was postponed until daylight, and a second wave of searchers were also called for the morning.
On 09/26, PNWSAR teams were assigned to search roads surrounding the search area by vehicle, and to grid search high-probability areas off trail. The vegetation was thick and heavy, but the weather was clear. An evening wave of searchers arrived about 4:00pm, and the search continued until dark.
A final wave of PNWSAR searchers responded in the early morning of 09/27. The PNWSAR ground team searched off-trail segments with heavily forested, brushy, sloping terrain. No evidence was found in these areas. About 3:45pm, a Portland Mountain Rescue (PMR) team in the field reported they had located the subject deceased, approximately 300 meters west of where his car had been found, at the bottom of a steep-sided creek. PMR performed the technical recovery. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers, also including Washington County SAR, Tillamook County SAR, and Mountain Wave SAR, and we extend our condolences to the man’s family and friends.
In the evening of 09/17, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance with an injured 60-year-old hiker. The subject was approximately 4 miles from the Top Spur Trailhead with a reported hip injury. When PNWSAR arrived at the search base, the AMR Reach and Treat team had embarked up the trail to attend to the injured subject. The first PNWSAR team followed behind with a wheeled litter to package the subject for transport. Three more PNWSAR teams deployed up the trail as they arrived at base to assist with the packout, and the initial PNWSAR team met AMR about 3 miles up the trail. The responding teams packaged the subject in the litter and worked their way back down a difficult trail in significant rain. Several hours later, the team arrived at the trailhead with the subject, and provided rain protection while she was unpackaged from the litter and prepared for transfer to the waiting ambulance. PNWSAR left base in the early hours of the morning. PNWSAR wishes the subject well in her recovery, and extends our gratitude to our emergency responder colleagues.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance for an evidence search on 09/09 involving a possible deceased male. PNWSAR completed search areas around the location the subject's vehicle had been found and along the trail. No clues were found. Our sympathy goes out to the missing man's family and friends.
A wildfire surrounding the Eagle Creek Trail stranded approximately 150 day hikers from reaching the trailhead on 09/02. That night, the Hood River Sheriff’s Office (HRSO) requested PNWSAR assistance with evacuating and supporting the large group of hikers. When PNWSAR arrived at base at Wahtum Lake, the United States Forest Service (USFS) incident commander was concerned about sending SAR personnel into the fire closure area that night. Good information about the size, behavior, and exact location of the fires was not yet available.
There were two fires at play, the older Indian Springs fire that had closed the Eagle Creek Trail several miles from the trailhead months earlier, and the new Eagle Creek fire that started near the trailhead. The day hikers were now trapped between these two fire zones. A USFS ranger was hiking in to the stranded hikers, and USFS and HRSO wanted a report from her before sending anyone else in. When she reached the hikers, who by then had all collected together in a group, she radioed for assistance supporting the hikers but did not have extensive information about the lower Eagle Creek fire. USFS fire personnel escorted five responders from the Crag Rats team to help. The remaining Crag Rats and PNWSAR waited for the next morning to enter, when more information about fire size, location, and behavior would be available.
SAR personnel do not typically have wildfire behavior training, nor do they typically carry and wear the protective equipment required for people entering a fire closure area, even when escorted. However, exceptions to this rule are allowed for emergencies, at the discretion of the incident command staff. Once the Crag Rat advance team with their USFS escorts were on their way to help, the immediate danger to the stranded hikers was deemed mitigated and it made sense for remaining SAR responders to stay at base until fire personnel had a chance to assess the fire danger. Authorities also hoped to determine if it was possible to evacuate the group back down Eagle Creek Trail, which would be a much shorter route to safety from their location if it were possible.
Early the next morning, HRSO assigned PNWSAR to haul food and water to the hikers and to help escort them out to safety at Wahtum Lake. The Eagle Creek Trailhead route out was not an option. PNWSAR responders loaded their packs with supplies and were escorted down the trail by two USFS firefighters. When they reached the hikers, who were strung out along the trail already making their way toward Wahtum Lake, they passed out food and water and set up a water filtering station to fill water bottles from the creek. Food and water was still in short supply for such a large group. As the morning progressed, the stranded hikers arrived at the Wahtum Lake base in small groups, and all were eventually accounted for by early afternoon. Several PNWSAR responders assisted one hiker who collapsed in the last 100 meters up the stairs to base, and she received medical care. HRSO provided food and water for everyone at base, and then all the hikers were transported by buses back to their vehicles at the Eagle Creek Trailhead.
PNWSAR was out of the field by 1:00pm and were released. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers and our emergency responder colleagues.
In the early evening of 08/26, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance with an injured hiker approximately 3 miles up the Clackamas River Trail. The 60-year-old subject had been hiking with family members and suffered a serious ankle sprain. The AMR Reach and Treat team was deployed ahead of PNWSAR's arrival to treat the subject's injury, and they attempted to assist him out with crutches. However, the trail terrain was difficult and had areas of blowdown that were challenging to navigate, and it was determined the subject would not be able to walk out. A litter evacuation down the trail would have been similarly difficult. A PNWSAR responder moved the team truck along Highway 224 to act as a radio relay, to alleviate the poor communication connection back to base. A route out crossing the Clackamas River via a Portland General Electric overhead cable basket was considered, but the south shore access was too difficult. CCSO called its Dive Team and the Clackamas County Fire Swiftwater Team to assist. They launched an open floor pontoon boat at the Hole-in-the-Wall access, and quickly ferried the subject and all responders across the river just before darkness fell. Everyone returned to base and PNWSAR was released. PNWSAR wishes the subject well in his recovery, and extends our gratitude to our emergency responder colleagues.
CCSO located a car belonging to a despondent person who had been missing for a few weeks, and requested PNWSAR assistance for the morning of 08/26 in the search for the missing person. Two PNWSAR teams were deployed in multiple search segments radiating from the subject's vehicle. The terrain was varied, and an area closer to the vehicle was searched before moving on to a second area further from the vehicle. The subject was found deceased during first sweep of the second area. CCSO deputies responded to the site of the recovery. PNWSAR stayed to help secure the scene until the medical examiner arrived and additional team members could respond to assist with the recovery. PNWSAR extends our condolences to the man's family and friends.
Skamania County requested ground searchers for the morning of 08/22 in the search for a missing 15-year-old with a reported mental disability near the Lahar Viewpoint of Mt St Helens. She had been reported missing in the early afternoon of 08/21. As the PNWSAR team prepared to leave base to start our search assignment, the Volcano Rescue Team found the subject in good condition on a trail near Smith Creek. She was returned to her family, and PNWSAR was released. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.
In the afternoon of 08/15, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance locating and potentially transporting a hiker who had reportedly fallen approximately 50 feet. The AMR Reach and Treat team, Portland Mountain Rescue, and Mountain Wave Search and Rescue were also called out. It was later learned that while the subject and her friend had stopped to rest along the PCT, near the Paradise Park Trail junction, her pack rolled backward into Zigzag Canyon about 50 feet. She attempted to retrieve it and tumbled 20 to 30 feet. She was essentially uninjured, yet unable to return up the steep slope. A passerby made a call to Timberline Lodge and another called 911. Later a third passerby dropped down a hand line and she was able to climb the slope.
The AMR team entered the field about an hour ahead of PNWSAR, and encountered the subject near the Hidden Lake Trail junction, but she denied being the subject who was reported in need of assistance. The subject returned to Timberline Lodge. CCSO directed the AMR team to continue up the PCT because the two calls for help had a reasonable chance of being two different events, and it had not been confirmed they were for the same incident. The first PNWSAR team entered the field just after the subject reached the lodge area, missing crossing paths by a few minutes. Still anticipating the subject was in the field, two more PNWSAR teams were stationed at separate trailheads in case the subject took one of the variety of trails out of the area of the phone calls. Teams thoroughly checked the areas around the locations of the two phone calls and found nobody in need of help. Eventually, after a couple hours the subject did walk into base and reported that she was, in fact, the subject and that she was safe. All teams were called back to base and released. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance on the evening of 08/12. Two hikers had fallen from the Paradise Park Trail. When PNWSAR arrived at base, an initial hasty team was sent in to assist the AMR Reach and Treat team, who had already entered the field. Remaining PNWSAR responders waited at base for AMR and the PNWSAR hasty team to assess the situation. When the first teams in reached the subjects, they determined both fallen hikers were deceased. CCSO elected to wait until daylight to send in the medical examiner and begin the recovery, and the PNWSAR responders at the scene sheltered in place with the subjects until morning. The others waited at base.
At first light, the waiting PNWSAR responders were sent in to bring supplies to the team in the field, and to assist with the recovery. A small team of PNWSAR personnel were assigned to assess the condition of the Paradise Park Trail to determine if it was a viable extraction route; they found it was not, and were re-deployed to the recovery effort. By 7:40am, the subjects were packaged in litters and awaiting extraction on the Timberline Trail. Additional PNWSAR members went in to help in two more waves through the morning, along with Portland Mountain Rescue when they arrived at base.
At 2:25pm, all teams arrived back at base with the subjects. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers and our emergency responder colleagues. PNWSAR extends our sincere condolences to the two young women's families and friends.
CCSO called PNWSAR to assist Hoodland Fire with a packout in the early afternoon of 08/12, but were quickly stood down en route when it was determined Hoodland Fire did not need additional assistance.
On 08/12, Linn County requested PNWSAR assistance with the search for a 70-year-old missing huckleberry picker, last seen Wednesday afternoon (08/09). PNWSAR reached the base location at Maxwell Butte Sno-park early that morning, and just as the search team was leaving base for their assignment, another search team in the field reported they had found the subject alive and in good condition. The PNWSAR team was released as no further assistance was needed, and celebrated the happy ending with breakfast in Detroit before returning home. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.
In the evening of 08/05, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance with an injured subject who had fallen in a canyoneering accident on the Salmon River near Final Falls. The search base was at the Salmon River Trailhead. The AMR Reach and Treat team was hiking toward the subject, based on location information from the reporting party. The first PNWSAR team, including several members of the PNWSAR Rope Support Team (RST), was deployed on the Salmon River Trail toward the subject carrying gear for a rope evacuation system. A second PNWSAR team followed up the trail when they arrived. When PNWSAR arrived at the trail location above the subject, RST responders lowered to the river level, about 1200 feet below the trail. They made contact with the AMR team via radio and headlamps, and decided that AMR would bring the subject a short ways downstream to the rope access location. Since the subject was dressed in a wetsuit, this was most easily accomplished by carefully floating the subject down the river.
Meanwhile, the PNWSAR RST team built a rope evacuation system up the cliff to the trail, setting anchors and ropes. Once the subject and AMR reached the rope access location, PNWSAR packaged him in a Sked litter in preparation for a raise with the rope system. As this was happening, CCSO informed the teams in the field that a National Guard helicopter would be available at 7:30am, which was about a 4 hour wait. Teams decided to go ahead with the rope raise system, which would involve a series of individual segments up the cliff toward the trail, the first being about 400 feet long. However, the heavy brush, trees, and rocks along the rope route caused excessive friction along the system, and the rope raise was aborted in favor of waiting for the helicopter. Teams and the subject bivouacked in place to try to get a couple hours of rest. With the arrival of daylight, as they waited for the helicopter, RST responders began preparing a rope system with shorter raise segments of about 150 feet, as a backup evacuation system to the helicopter. This involved setting new anchors and rerouting the ropes.
At 7:30am on 08/06, the helicopter arrived to attempt a litter extraction. After about 20 minutes on site, the helicopter crew determined the procedure was too dangerous and the mission was aborted. As the preparation of the new rope raise system continued, a Portland Mountain Rescue team arrived to assist, and word was also received that the helicopter could return at 10:30am with a different extraction plan, which had a higher probability of success. The rope raise plan was again put on hold for the second attempt with the helicopter. The subject was moved about 100 feet away to where a new extraction area had been prepared. The helicopter operation was completed without complications, and the subject was transported to a local hospital. PNWSAR retrieved all of the ropes gear, then returned to base about 3:30pm.
PNWSAR wishes the subject well in his recovery, and extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers and emergency responder colleagues.
PNWSAR assisted CCSO with a continuation of the evidence search from the previous week.
On 07/30, PNWSAR assisted Multnomah County with an evidence search for an ongoing investigation.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance locating a 28-year-old female on horseback who had gone missing near Riley Horse Camp. PNWSAR stood down en route when word was received the subject had been located.
PNWSAR assisted CCSO with an evidence search related to an open investigation.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance with packing out an injured hiker near McNeil Point, reportedly with two shoulder dislocations and unable to walk out. While PNWSAR was en route, the subject encountered a doctor on the trail, who reduced the subject's should dislocations, and he was able to walk out on his own. PNWSAR stood down.
On 07/09, PNWSAR and other volunteer SAR organizations assisted Multnomah County with an evidence search for an ongoing investigation.
In the afternoon of 07/08, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance with an injured woman at Veda Lake. The AMR Reach and Treat team was with the subject, and assistance with patient transport was anticipated. However, while PNWSAR was en route and arriving at base, CCSO reported that the subject was now able to walk out with AMR and PNWSAR stood down.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance in the early morning of 07/07 with a missing 18-year-old male. He had reportedly hiked ahead of his party, and subsequently never appeared at their campsite. Teams were tasked with hasty searching PCT and Trail 537 from Rd 42 to Little Crater Lake. Upon completion of the search assignments, and as the PNWSAR ATV team was arriving at base about 1030, the subject was brought to base by some campers whom he'd run into. PNWSAR debriefed with CCSO and was released.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance transporting an injured female hiker on the Boulder Ridge Trail on the evening of 07/01. She reportedly had a broken ankle. Hoodland Fire and the AMR Reach and Treat team were on scene and were packaging the subject in a Sked litter, but needed assistance packing her to the trailhead. PNWSAR responded with two teams, and the first team into the field brought a wheeled litter, which is easier for patient transport in some terrain. The trail was very steep, narrow, and rocky in some areas, and the team also had to navigate a large tree down over the trail. Using a combination of the Sked and wheeled litters and deploying safety lines as necessary, the combined team successfully brought the subject to the trailhead. All searchers signed out and headed home just after midnight. PNWSAR wishes the subject well in her recovery and extends our gratitude to our emergency responder colleagues.
Skamania County SO requested PNWSAR assistance in locating a 90-year-old male who had been missing since 6pm on Friday 06/30. PNWSAR arrived at base Saturday morning and were assigned to search in both directions along the road on which the subject's car had been found. Search assignments were completed both by vehicle and on foot. Several other search teams were also on scene, including Clark County SAR, Silver Star SAR, Evergreen Search Dogs, and Search Dogs NW. No clues were found, and searchers returned to base and were released at 5:45pm. A second wave was called for Sunday 07/02, and teams were assigned search areas around the subject's car's location to search by both foot and vehicle. Again no clues were found. The search was suspended at 4pm, and all searchers were released. Our sympathy goes out to the missing man's family and friends, and PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance with an injured mountain biker on the Sandy Ridge Trail System in the early evening of 06/30. Hoodland Fire had responded and needed help transporting the injured biker from his location about 2 miles in from the trailhead. PNWSAR was already in the area, heading home from the earlier mission near Ramona Falls, and about half of those responding members were able to divert to this mission. The first arriving searchers and Hoodland Fire personnel took the wheeled litter to the subject. The rest of the team assembled at the trailhead and hiked in to meet the initial team on the trail and assist with the packout. The team had returned to base with the subject before 2100, and were released. PNWSAR wishes the subject well in his recovery and extends our gratitude to our emergency responder colleagues.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance in the evening of 06/29, to respond early the next day. Two PCT through-hikers had lost their way on the Sandy Glacier. They were able to call for help and reported they were uninjured, had good supplies for the night, but had no navigation equipment other than the cell phone. They also provided UTM coordinates and photos of their location. CCSO initially hoped that a PNWSAR member with extensive PCT experience could talk the lost hikers back to the trail over the phone, but he was unable to reach them when the call went straight to voicemail. Instead he left them voicemail instructions to avoid the cliffs downstream of their location, and advised them that search teams would find them at their location in the morning.
PNWSAR arrived at base at the Ramona Falls Trailhead at 0600 on 06/30 and quickly deployed as one team toward the hikers' reported location, crossing the Sandy River twice. At 1010, PNWSAR reached an overlook from the PCT above their location, and spotted them in a canyon below. The hikers waved back at the searchers.
PNWSAR continued higher on the trail in modest snow to a point where the subjects likely left the trail into the canyon, at elevation 5250'. The team deployed ropes and four members descended into the canyon. They made contact with subjects and instructed them where to cross the creek (elevation 4900'), which is essentially a fork of the Sandy River. Next, four more members descended to aid in raising the subjects. The remaining five team members stayed at the lip of the canyon to assist with raising on the final pitch. All searchers and both subjects were back at the top of the canyon at 1320. The entire group retraced the route back to base with the subjects, where PNWSAR was released.
On the afternoon of 06/28, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance with three stranded hikers off of the PCT, near Zigzag Canyon. CCSO had UTM coordinates for the subjects on the east side of the canyon. The first PNWSAR team deployed from base at Timberline Lodge toward the subjects' location. A second PNWSAR team headed up the trail after them to provide support, while a Portland Mountain Rescue team deployed by snowcat up to Palmer Snow Field, with the intent to ski down to the subjects. PNWSAR reported they were with the subjects by 1700, and the ski team was called off. PNWSAR escorted the subjects back to base, and were released. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.
On the morning of 06/27, PNWSAR responded to a CCSO request for assistance at the Ripplebrook Store. A camper had left his family's campsite at Lake Harriet on Sunday evening and did not return. Further CCSO interviews with the subject's family led them to believe the subject was likely attempting to walk toward his home, which was in the Portland area. PNWSAR teams in 8 separate vehicles spread out over the road toward Estacada to search all of the campground areas on the way. As one team approached milepost 36, the subject was located standing on the north shoulder of the road. The subject had walked 17 miles in about 30 hours. As there is no cell service in this area, PNWSAR attempted to contact CCSO by radio, but was unsuccessful. PNWSAR transported the subject to Harvest Market in Estacada and waited there for deputies to arrive. The subject debriefed with CCSO and all searchers returned home.
In the early morning of 06/25, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance with an overdue 24-year-old hiker at the Bull of the Woods trailhead. The first two searchers on scene were assigned to a hasty search of the Bull of the Woods trail to the look out, then on to Pansy Lake. Two more teams were assembled as searchers arrived, and were assigned to search the areas surrounding a cell phone ping. At approximately 1330, the National Guard helicopter spotted the subject from the air, and PNWSAR teams were dispatched directly to subject's location, which was about 800 feet uphill from a road. The subject was uninjured and in good condition. Searchers led her back to the nearby road where Multnomah County searchers met them and drove her back to base. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.
A hiker lost the trail while hiking the Paradise Park Trail solo. The hiker called for help in the afternoon 06/22 with a cell phone, and CCSO was able to get a good location. The subject was in good shape and with adequate supplies, and she agreed to stay in place and wait for assistance. CCSO called PNWSAR for assistance locating the subject. PNWSAR fielded two teams, who were both dispatched to her reported location. The first team established voice contact with the subject, and found her approximately 10 meters from the cell-provided location, in good condition. Both teams returned to base with the subject.
A woman was reported missing, and her car had been found at Lacamas Lake. Clark County requested PNWSAR assistance in the early morning of 06/15. Our assignment was to work with Clark County searchers and search primarily the east side of Round Lake. PNWSAR finished our assignment by 1130 and returned to base. The subject was not found, and the Clark County deputies suspended the search. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers and our sympathy to the missing woman's family and friends.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance locating a missing male whose vehicle had been located. Before PNWSAR started the search assignment, the subject was located by CCSO, and PNWSAR was released. PNWSAR extends our condolences to the man's family and friends.
Skamania County requested PNWSAR assistance at the Dog Mountain Trailhead in the late evening of 05/29. A hiker had become ill on the trail, near the top of Dog Mountain, and required assistance getting out. Four other search teams were also on scene, including medics. Upon arrival, PNWSAR teams deployed up the trail to meet the packaged subject, who was already with other teams. PNWSAR worked with our fellow SAR volunteers to guide the litter down the trail, reaching the trailhead shortly before 0100, where family and additional medical care awaited. PNWSAR wishes the subject well in his recovery and extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.
CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance Tuesday night, 05/23. A 12-year-old, whose home borders wilderness area, had been missing since 4pm. Three PNWSAR teams, along with a Mountain Wave SAR K9 team, searched the property of the subject’s home, neighboring rural residential properties, and surrounding wilderness areas. Searchers returned to based just before 3am and were released.
The second wave of the search began at 7am on Wednesday, 05/24. PNWSAR was assigned to search the wilderness hillside above the subject’s home, followed by a second assignment along a forest corridor to the west of the subject’s home. After these assignments, the team took a break at base, where generous volunteers had provided snacks at the Hoodland Lutheran Church. Just as PNWSAR was leaving base for another search assignment, the subject was located hiding on the church grounds by other searchers. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers and supporters.
PNWSAR assisted Clark County and neighboring agencies with an evidence search related to an ongoing investigation. The teams worked together in the search area to complete a tight grid search. Searchers made two passes over the same area, and no evidence was found. Satisfied with the result, Clark County released all searchers after about an hour of searching.
In the afternoon of 05/11, CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance at the Salmon Butte Trail. A man and his dog had gone hiking the day before and not returned, and his car was located at the trailhead. Search was called off enroute when the subject drove past CCSO personnel. CCSO interviewed the missing man, and learned that he had gotten turned around in the snow at the top with no food or equipment. He spent a cold, wet, hungry night out, but was able to find the trail again in the morning.
On the night of 04/29, PNWSAR assisted CCSO with a couple who had lost the trail in the snow, approximately 2.5 miles from the Cast Creek Trailhead near Riley Horse Camp. The lost subjects were able to report their GPS coordinates to CCSO using a cell phone. The search team encountered heavy snow, which made for slow progress toward the couple's reported position. Additional searchers were sent into the field after the first team to assist. The lead team began sound sweeps about 1000m out, and eventually received a whistle blast in response. They reached the subjects at 12:45am at their reported location. They were cold and tired, but had good equipment and were sheltering from the building snowstorm under a tarp. The couple was able to walk out, and everyone reached base at 3:45am. Searchers debriefed and were released at 4:20am.
In the morning of 04/12, Multnomah County requested PNWSAR assistance with a person who had been missing for approximately one week. Her car had been located on 04/11 in the Columbia River Gorge. One PNWSAR team was assigned to search the Pacific Crest Trail from the Bridge of the Gods trailhead in Cascade Locks to the hunter’s camp on the Benson Plateau. Approximately one hour into this assignment, the fixed wing aircraft from Hood River County spotted tracks in the snow, west of the hunter’s camp at an elevation of 3200 feet. Search command redirected this team to investigate the snow tracks. When the team was approximately still 3 miles from the tracks, it was determined the stride length of the tracks seen by plane was too long to match the description of the subject. Given the low probability the subject had taken the route they were currently on and searcher fatigue from snow travel and long miles, the team was instructed to return to base, arriving there at 7:00pm.
A second PNWSAR team was teamed with a K9 team from Mountain Wave Search and Rescue and assigned to search the Ruckel Ridge Trail, looping around to the Ruckel Creek Trail. The Ruckel Ridge trail was steep, muddy, and slippery. Partway up the trail, this team received word from another team in the field that their intended loop included elevations that were currently covered in snow. As the K9 team was not prepared for snow travel, the team made the choice to return to base at that point, via the Ruckel Ridge trail instead of completing the loop, in order to be able to navigate the treacherous portions of the trail in daylight. They arrived at base at 11:15pm.
A second wave of PNWSAR searches was requested for the morning of 04/13. The responding PNWSAR team was paired with a Mountain Wave K9 unit, and assigned to search Trail #400 from Eagle Creek to the PCT trailhead at Cascade Locks. Their second assignment was Trail #402 to the top of Wauna Viewpoint, which they completed and then returned to base at 2:20pm. PNWSAR was released, and some responders returned home. However, before all responders had left base, radio traffic indicated the Crag Rats team had encountered the deceased subject near Sorenson Falls. The access to the subject’s recovery location was very technical. A PNWSAR responder experienced in rope rescue stayed to assist the Crag Rats, Multnomah County Search and Rescue, and Mountain Wave with the recovery. The recovery team returned to base about 6:45pm. PNWSAR extends our condolences to the woman's family and friends, and our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.

The PNWSAR teams deployed on our assignment up the Oneonta Trail toward the unmarked Rock of Ages Trail, employing voice calls. However, the first team to reach Oneonta Creek encountered a dangerous night crossing, and had to return to base, meeting the second team on the way down the trail. Both teams returned to base. PNWSAR debriefed with MCSO and were released about 1230. MCSO originally requested assistance from our Ropes Support Team for the morning of 03/24, however, another search team located the subject safe shortly after 0300. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers.
An 18yo male had been missing in Estacada since Sunday 03/11/2017, reportedly wearing only light blue pajama bottoms. CCSO requested PNWSAR assistance on the afternoon of 03/16. We fielded two teams and were tasked with searching the paths along the Clackamas River, including small game trails and river access trails created by fishermen. Our teams started at each end of the search area and worked back towards one another. One of our teams was paired with a dog team from Mountain Wave SAR. There were several unoccupied homeless camps along the river. While in the field, PNWSAR searched several nearby places for any evidence the subject may have been there. The teams returned to base and were able to report on a location where the subject may have been caught underwater in a downed tree, and suggested the Dive Team investigate this area further. Both teams were redeployed to search near and below the dam. PNWSAR then returned to base and was released at 2000.
PNWSAR returned the next morning, 03/17, for a second operational period. Our team was assigned to contact residents door-to-door to inquire if they had seen the subject and ask people to check their properties. We divided our responding members into 3 teams and each team was given a zone of houses to canvass. Door-to-door contacts were finished about 1100 and PNWSAR was given a 2nd assignment, which was to search two areas below the dam. The first area was about a mile below the dam on a Rock Quarry property next to the river. River access was challenging and the river was extremely high. No clues were found. The 2nd assigned search area was just below the dam, the same area we had searched the day before. After completing the 2nd search area, PNWSAR returned to base and were released. The search was suspended pending further information. PNWSAR extends our gratitude to our fellow SAR volunteers and our sympathy to the missing teen's friends and family.

Snow had been falling consistently throughout the week. PNWSAR was tasked with searching and probing tree wells in steep terrain above the parking area where the subject's car had been located, with the idea that he may have skied through there on his way back to the car. No clues were found. The team completed the highest probability section of the search area with snowshoes and skis by 2pm, returned to base, and were released.
The following morning, 03/11, PNWSAR returned to Mt Hood Meadows for a continuation of the search. PNWSAR joined forces with the 304 PJ team for an assignment located near the base of the Heather Canyon chairlift. Hood River County transported searchers by snowcat approximately 1 mile up the canyon to the lift. The team was tasked with traversing the mountain slope in this area and climbed the canyon, grid searching for about 1 hour before being forced to retreat due to safety concerns. The next search area was a small patch of trees located near the Hood River Meadows chairlift. Conditions were still steep and the snow was much more difficult to navigate. Again, no clues were located. The formal search was suspended, though an informal effort continued.
